Customer-focused and progressive, we developed New Zealand's first commercial electric yacht in 2010. From the goal of reducing carbon emissions, we have evolved to embrace sustainability as our core value.

Sail Barbary is currently involved with Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) and Love Taupō’s 12-week sustainability programme. The group has been learning together and sharing information about the sustainability work we’ve been doing so far.

I’ve been looking at carbon calculators to measure our carbon footprint. This year, we chose EKOS. We measured our emissions using the EKOS carbon calculator and offset both our boats through their programme.

I’ve also been working to minimise the waste generated by the yacht.

You’ll now find recycled cups on board, which I purchased from our local hospice shop. Remember the hard-wearing Arcoroc cups from the 1980s? Yep, they’re still going strong.

I recently purchased a new rubbish bin to support waste separation. We’re very keen to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill — and no more plastic bin liners!

We encourage you to bring your own drink bottles as part of our waste minimisation efforts.
