Our Tiaki Promise
Caring for New Zealand, Together
When you sail with us, you're not just a passenger, you're part of how we look after Lake Taupō and the wider world around it. That's the heart of the Tiaki Promise, and it's something we're proud to be part of.
The Tiaki Promise was created by some of New Zealand's leading tourism and conservation organisations, including Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Tourism Industry Aotearoa, and New Zealand Māori Tourism, with a shared goal of helping visitors travel safely, respectfully, and with genuine care for the country.
Tiaki means to care for people and place. The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, now and for future generations. New Zealand is precious, and everyone who lives and travels here has a responsibility to look after it.
By following the Tiaki Promise, you're making a commitment to New Zealand, to act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home.

How We Bring It to Life
For us, the Tiaki Promise isn't just words, it shows up in how we operate every day. Sailing aboard New Zealand's only commercial electric yacht, managing waste carefully onboard, and treating Lake Taupō with the respect it deserves are all part of how we protect this place.
For our guests, it can be just as simple: take only photos, leave only footprints, and travel with the same care for this place that we do.
What the Promise Asks of Us
While travelling in New Zealand, the Tiaki Promise asks everyone to:
Care for land, sea and nature, treading lightly and leaving no trace.
Travel safely, showing care and consideration for all.
Respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind.
It's a simple set of values, but one that shapes how we run Sail Barbary and how we hope every guest experiences Lake Taupō with us.
