About Us

The Barbary:
A Living Legacy
Built in 1926 from native New Zealand kauri and once owned by actor Errol Flynn, the Barbary has a rich and storied past. Her journey continues today as one of the most recognisable and beloved vessels on Lake Taupō.
Barbary has been carefully restored and upgraded with sustainable sailing in mind. Every change — from her sails and rigging to her state-of-the-art electric engine — reflects our commitment to preserving both heritage and the environment.
New Zealand’s First and Only Commercial Electric Yacht
Incredibly Quiet… and Quite Incredible. In 2010, Sail Barbary made history by becoming New Zealand’s first and only commercial electric yacht. It was a quiet shift with a powerful purpose. We believed a clean electric motor would not only protect the lake but also transform the experience for our guests. That belief still holds true today.
Our zero-emissions yacht glides silently across the volcanic waters of Lake Taupō, allowing you to soak up the scenery just as nature intended — calm, unpolluted and uninterrupted. It’s a peaceful, guilt-free way to explore this incredible place while supporting a future where adventure and care go hand in hand.
We are more than operators. We are guardians. Kaitiaki of the lake, its stories and the land that surrounds it. This is a responsibility we hold with pride, preserving this special place for generations to come. Classic sailing. Electric soul.

Your Safety, Always
Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Every Sail Barbary experience is backed by full Maritime New Zealand compliance, detailed safety briefings, and crew trained in emergency response.
Our stable vessels and smooth conditions make for a relaxing, accessible journey, no matter your age or experience level.
