Taupō's new lakefront and how to find the Boat Harbour

Heading to Sail Barbary or Kakariki for a cruise? Taupō's lakefront has changed, so here's how to get to the boat without any last-minute stress, plus a little about the new space you'll walk past on the way.
Where to find us
Sail Barbary and Kakariki are based at Berths 9 & 10, Redoubt Street, Taupō Boat Harbour.
Please be at the boat 15 minutes before your departure time. That gives you time to settle in and hear the safety briefing before we cast off.
If you're running late or can't find us, give us a call on 07 378 5879 and we'll point you in the right direction.
What's changed in town
The corner where Tongariro Street meets Ruapehu Street has been closed to traffic and turned into a space for people, so if you're driving into Taupō on your usual route, you're in for a surprise.
For a quicker way into town, head up Spa Road and come in via Ruapehu Street or Titiraupenga Street. That's the easiest route to the shops, your favourite café, the petrol station or your bach.
Getting to the Boat Harbour
You can reach the Boat Harbour three ways:
Redoubt Street, which takes you straight to our berths
Story Place
Ferry Road
Summer is busy around the lakefront, so give yourself a few extra minutes to find a park and walk down to the boat.
The new atea on the lakefront
The bonus of all this is a fantastic new atea (gathering place) for everyone to enjoy. Outdoor bars and cafés now spill out onto green spaces with views down the lake to the mountains, so it's a lovely spot for a coffee before your cruise or a bite to eat afterwards.
At the heart of the atea stands a striking, traditionally carved pou, surrounded by 13 sculptures that represent the waterways flowing into Lake Taupō. It's worth a wander, especially before you head out to see the Ngātoroirangi Māori rock carvings on the lake.
